Researching the approaches that other organisations in your sector are taking is a valuable exercise and can provide useful insights to help you develop your own strategy. Meaningful employment is generally good for a person’s health and wellbeing; having something meaningful to do can be a great enabler of recovery; however, poor health, including mental ill health, is often a barrier to obtaining employment and participating in good quality work. Overcoming discrimination is essential in helping people with mental health conditions to get work and to keep it. Some organizations have on-staff mental health professionals to support team members. Army barracks in the U.K. have their own resident psychologists, and the U.S. Department of Defense employs more psychologists than any other employer in the country. Ideally, all organizations would have sufficient support from mental health professionals, but the current widespread shortage of mental health providers could cause a bottleneck. For employers not investing in wellbeing initiatives, how to manage an employee with anxiety can be a difficult notion to comprehend.Flexible working can benefit mental health by decreasing the amount of conflict people experience between their work and home lives. This conflict can be a source of stress and may contribute to anxiety and depression. Recognise that we all have mental health, and we all feel overwhelmed at times. Anticipate times when people might be under stress either for work or personal reasons and encourage support and self-care at those times. Talking about your feelings can help you to maintain good mental health. It can also help you to cope when you are feeling worried. Speaking to colleagues about your feelings, or sharing a problem, is not a weakness. It is part of maintaining positive mental health and taking control of your wellbeing. Mental health problems should be supported in the same, honest and consistent way that physical health problems are. The term burnout was originally coined in the 1970s to describe the consequences of ‘severe stress and high ideals’ among the helping professions. These are fields where many feel a high level of moral purpose, a dedication to making a difference and an urge to go above and beyond. This well-intentioned source of motivation can take its toll on a person. Does this sound familiar? Communication that emphasizes that leadership cares about concepts such as managing employees with mental health issues should be welcomed in the working environment.Prioritising Employee EngagementThe mismanagement of issues of diversity in the workplace can often lead to social exclusion and create a discriminatory work environment. Substantial research evidence demonstrates that discriminatory experiences have a significant negative impact on both mental and physical health outcomes. Employers should adopt the principles of the HSE Stress Management Standards for employees or groups of employees that it is felt may be affected by stress. Irrespective of the work setting, people’s needs will be taken into consideration and staff will feel comfortable enough to be truthful about how they are coping and raise concerns where appropriate. Really, this should be possible within every positive company culture.
